Fiesta St Championship To Be Decided At Mondello Park

Fiesta ST Championship to be decided at Mondello Park

Mondello Park’s, ‘The Trailer Company’ Fiesta ST Championship, is set to play a starring role in this weekend’s Leinster Trophy race meeting, the final Car Race event of the 2018 season. The highly competitive one make series for identical Fiestas, will boast its biggest grid of the year as the championship is decided over two races at the County Kildare venue on Sunday September 16th.

Backed by Limerick based ‘The Trailer Company’, agents for leading motorsport and commercial trailer manufacturers ‘Brian James’, the championship has enjoyed an exciting season with six different winners across the ten rounds run so far. Only two drivers have won on more than one occasion and it’s those two, Michael Cullen and reigning champion David Maguire, who will be involved in the battle to be the 2018 championship.

As a four time race winner Cullen’s consistency has allowed him to build an eleven point gap over Maguire whose non-finish at Round seven really dented his championship challenge. With each driver dropping their two worst scores from the season, Cullen will score a minimum of twenty four points, even if he fails to finish both races. This gives Maguire a target of thirty five points, meaning he must finish ahead of Cullen in both races and take at least one victory to have any chance of retaining his crown. Maguire’s task will be made all the harder, even if he wins race one, as he will then have to overcome a sixth place start to do it again in race two.

Despite not being in contention for the title there will be plenty of drivers out to add to their win tally, including series sponsor and round five winner Darragh McMullen, who will have his own battle with Barry-John McHenry to hold on to third in the standings. Others in with a shout of victory will include round two winner John Denning, Graham McDonnell who took his maiden win at round seven and the latest driver to taste victory, round ten winner Brendan Fitzgerald.

The final two races for the 2018 Fiesta ST championship will be contested on the Mondello Park International Track, the first time the class has run on this layout all season. Qualifying and both races will run on Sunday of the two day event with race one set for 11:50 and the season finale at 16:15.
